January - General Meeting - No Meetings
February 6th - General Meeting - General Meeting – Topic: Water Quality
Water quality is something that frequently gets overlooked in growing bonsai but is very important and can seriously impact your ability to grow certain species such as azaleas and calcifiles like Stewartia. February 6th general meeting topic will be water quality including water pH and hardness. Both of these parameters are easy to measure through the use of readily available techniques including small pH meters, pH paper, and hardness meters and hardness test strips. Bring some of your water that you use to water your trees in a clean, preferably never been used container. Small plastic or glass containers with maximum 1 liter capacity are fine. Do not worry about the size of the opening. The water can be transferred to an open container for measurements. We will compare some of the available methods of measurement and you will get valuable information that you can use to better grow bonsai. For those of you that already monitor pH and hardness, bring your experiences with water variability and results of any corrective actions you have taken. There will be a very short discussion on the basics of pH and hardness (water chemistry 101) for the non-chemists in the meeting. For those of you already tackling this important topic, shared experience is welcome. If time permits, we will discuss what topics the group would like to explore during future meetings.
