Bonsai professional Workshop with Matt Reel September 2017

Bonsai Professional - Matt Reel

Matt Reel’s addiction to Bonsai began when he was a 14-year-old teenager in Portland, Oregon. Upon graduating from high school, with the help of many great friends, family, and mentors, he landed in a small town called Obuse, located in Nagano-prefecture, Japan to start his bonsai apprenticeship with Shinji Suzuki.  While studying in Japan, Matt had the opportunity to style and wire several trees that were shown at the Kokufu-ten bonsai show as well as the Taiken-ten bonsai exhibition.

Bonsai Professional - Matt Reel

Matt returned from Japan in 2014 after a staggering 8 years apprenticeship with Shinji Suzuki. He returned to Portland to start his professional career, filling out the Portland Bonsai Village contingency (Matt Reel, Ryan Neil, Austin Heitzman, Randy Knight, and Michael Hagedorn). Matt is known for his broad expertise in working with a wide range of conifer and deciduous trees, as well as his knowledge of bonsai pots and bonsai display aesthetics. Matt’s highly refined styling of trees is making him in demand as a presenter and as a caretaker of bonsai collections for serious aficionados. Matt will be appearing as a headliner at Generation Bonsai 2016 in Germany with Bjorn Bjornholm and Michael Tran and will be a guest artist at Brussels’ Bonsai Rendezvous 2016 during Memorial Day weekend.

As a member of MBS, you can register for a workshop session to learn from and work with Matt.  There will be a morning classroom session (1-1/2 hr) each day concentrating on fall work principles and practices followed by an afternoon working session applying these techniques to your own trees.  Working sessions are limited to 6 members per day.  You may also attend (either/or both) the morning classroom and afternoon session as observer.  If you've never attended a Bonsai Professional  workshop and are not sure what to expect, attending the classroom or a session as a silent observer is a great learning experience and an outstanding value.
