May 20 was the kick-off to the 2017 novice workshops. There were almost 60 participants and a lot of great looking trees. Thank you to Tim McCarthy and all the MBS volunteers that make these workshops happen.

We look forward to seeing all the new MBS members at the meetings!

MBS 1978 Mother's Day Show

This is traditionally one of the two major shows the society presents each year, and this year is very special!  This is our 40th continuous year of presenting our member’s bonsai trees to the public at Como Conservatory.  In the early years we would clear all or part of a Como growing area in the greenhouse.  Existing growing plants would be removed and we would bring in our bonsai to display on tables along a winding wooden plank walkway. The greenhouse was just off the old concrete room we used for workshops.  All that was removed in the early 1990’s to make space for the new visitor center.

40th Anniversary

Show co-chairpersons are: Ken Ellis, Van Jensen, Jerry Nelson and Mike Porcaro (these four MBS members currently volunteer their time and talents weekly to help maintain the permanent Como bonsai collection).

Mother’s Day Bonsai Show at Como Conservatory 2017

by John Falenschek

Finally, spring has arrived and trees are budding! This is a sure sign that it’s time for the annual Mother’s Day Show in the Marjorie Mc Neely Conservatory at Como, May 13th- 14th. We need your trees and we need you to volunteer to help make the weekend a success. Remember how fascinated you were when you first saw a bonsai tree at the state fair or Como? This is your opportunity to show your trees and inspire someone to take a class or even join the club.  If you don’t have a tree ready to show, we are also displaying viewing stones (suiseki) and accent plants.

There is no judging, so please bring your tree to display and be there to share your interest in bonsai with the public. You don’t need to be an expert, just enthusiastic! The added bonus is that you’ll have an opportunity to meet all kinds of interested and interesting people and spend some quality time with other club members.

This is my first Mother’s Day event and I’m hoping that those of you who have experience with it can come forward and volunteer to help out. I am especially looking for those with experience to help out with Saturday May 13th and captain each shift as I can not be there that day.

Please contact John Falenschek at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it., or call 763-482-1493 to sign up for a volunteer time slot Friday, Saturday or Sunday and/or how many trees you will be bringing. (P.S. I’ll be recruiting participants at the Tuesday meetings!)

Friday, May 12: Bring bonsai trees to the garage entry between 4:30 and 6:00

Saturday, May 13: 10:00 AM - 6:00 PM
Sunday May 14: 10:00 AM -6:00 PM

Sunday, May 14: 6:00 PM (or as soon as visitors have completed their tour). Locked gate to the parking area will remain open until 7:30 PM Friday and Sunday.
